A Brief Summary.

·         I was born in Aberdare, South Wales where I studied up to post graduate level and worked mainly in the teaching and social care sector. I completed my PGCE FE at Cardiff university.

·         I was granted residency in New Zealand in March 2007 and lived there until December 2016. While living in New Zealand, I taught at Rotorua Girls’ High School where I held the position of Assistant Head of English for one year and taught English to years 9, 10, 12 and 13 and Psychology to years 11 and 12 for a total of 8 years. At this school I was also the TIC of the annual speech competition, and I was an associate teacher for a teacher in training. I was also employed by NZQA as an external marker.

·         I moved to Brunei in January 2017. I taught at the International School of Brunei (ISB) for 3 years. There I taught English to years 7-13 (IGCSE and IB), theory of knowledge to years 7 and 8, and IGCSE psychology to years 9 and 10. I also managed a tutor class and was an EE and CAS supervisor for the IB course.

·         I taught O Level English at an Arabic secondary school in Brunei; this position was managed through the UK company, Education Trust. I was also an associate teacher and an O Level oral examiner.

·         I have a genuine passion for teaching, especially concerning those who are disadvantaged in some way. I have a holistic, restorative pedagogy. I believe students learn best when relationships are established, their needs are met and any difficulties that may arise are managed in a restorative manner.

·         In 2023 I completed my master’s in education, my thesis was based on educational attainment for students with SEN

·         My current ambition is to undertake the lead in behaviour and culture within a school and to undertake training to become the lead in mental health.

Teaching experience.

St Martin’s Secondary School, Caerphilly. January 2025 – present. Job Title – Teacher of English

Since working in St Martin’s, I have taught English to years 7-13. I am also teaching media studies to year 11 and 12. I have worked closely with my faculty members to implement the new English Curriculum and produced resources. I have taught large classes but also managed to build solid relationships with the students and ensured that every student has what they need to reach their potential. I have recently completed the WRAP PD and have undertaken the required additional responsibilities, such as, teacher-parent interviews and report writing. I am currently involved in a team of teachers tasked with the responsibility to re-work the behaviour policy.

 

Katok Girls Arab school. Brunei. January 2021 – December 2024.  Job Title – Teacher of English

I worked at Katok Girls Arab school in Brunei for three years. My employment was managed through a company called CFBT who are a branch of Education Trust based in the UK. I taught years 9, 10 and 11 O Level English. I also managed the library ECA, have led department PD’s in dyslexia and adaptive teaching and I am an associate teacher supporting new teachers who join the company. I have completed courses through TES and the Charted College of Teaching. I am also an O Level oral examiner.

 

ISB International School. Brunei. August 2017 – July 2020. Job Title – Teacher of English, Psychology and Theory of Knowledge.

I worked at ISB in Brunei for three years. I taught English to years 7, 9, 10, 11 (IGCSE) 12 and 13 (IB), theory of knowledge to years 7 and 8, and IGCSE psychology and to years 9 and 10. I also taught creative writing as part of the school’s enrichment programme. As part of the schools ECA programme I managed a ‘jungle trekking’ club, this concluded with myself and other teachers taking a group of students up Mount Kota Kinabalu in Malaysia. In addition to this I also assisted with school performances and the Duke of Edinburgh award . I attended regular PLC meetings and was observed formally and informally. I established excellent relationships with my students and developed ILP’s for those who require extra help due to SEN or ELA status.

 

Rotorua Girls High School, NZ. February 2009 – December 2016. Job Title - Teacher of English, Psychology and Social Studies

I completed my NZ secondary teacher registration at this school and while teaching there I taught all abilities from year 9 to year 13. I taught - English, psychology and junior social studies.

In addition to teaching these subjects I also demonstrated leadership by undertaking the following: I held the role of assistant HOD in 2016, TIC of speech finals and I was an associate teacher for a teacher in training. I led a school wide PD on dyslexia. I Managed a week long EOTC for year 9 students (education outside the classroom). I Led PD for the English faculty on, ‘preparing senior students for external exams’

I was also involved in extra-curricular activities: I managed the Pacific Island Group and helped them prepare for competitions, I also helped with the school production as a singing coach. I was a lead teacher for the programme, ‘Love Me Not’ (a police driven initiative to help students identify negative relationships). I was also responsible for identifying students with irlens.

 

NZQA. November 2014 – January 2015. November 2015 – January 2016 Job Title – External Marker

During this time, I was employed by NZQA as an external marker. I was responsible for marking NCEA Level Two English exam papers.  I found this experience extremely worthwhile regarding my professional development. Following this experience, I then led an English faculty PD on preparing students for external exams.

During 2015 I was employed again to mark NCEA Level One English exam papers.

 

Rotorua English Language Academy, NZ. June 2007 – January 2008. Job Title – ESOL Teacher

I worked on a casual basis for Rotorua English Language Academy as an ESOL teacher and an activities tutor. I taught a variety of classes encompassing a range of students and abilities.

 

Other Employment.

 

Cynon Valley Crime Prevention Association (South Wales). 01/2000-05/2001 Job Title – School Project Officer.

During this employment some of my duties were: liaising with teachers while setting up junior crime prevention panels, arranging activity weekends for the junior Crime Prevention Panels, I also taught a weekly class in local secondary schools which was part of the PSE Curriculum.

 

Vale Community Support Team (South Wales). 05/2001-12/2001. Job Title - Assistant Social Worker.

I worked with children who had learning difficulties and/or physical difficulties in the Children’s Disability Team. I visited clients and assessed their needs, I co-ordinated holiday play schemes and I worked directly with children and teenagers on the child protection register carrying out assessments of their needs.

 

Penrhys Partnership (South Wales) 01/2002-12/2003. Job Title - Co-ordinator for Penrhys Art and Education Centre.

I co-ordinated activities that took place in the Art Centre. I also supervised the general running of the centre, I employed freelance tutors to teach art and performance classes, I supervised volunteers who worked with the children and teenagers who attended the centre, I taught weekly ESOL and drama classes and managed short-term projects, long-term projects, concerts and shows.

 

January 2004 – January 2005

I taught English and lived in Sri Lanka for 3 months. I then travelled around, Australia and New Zealand.  

 

National Fostering Agency. 03/2005-04/2007. Job Title – Fostering Duty Officer.

I was responsible for identifying foster placements for children aged 0-18 years. I had to consider the foster child’s needs, such as: educational attainment, suitability to be placed alongside other children whilst ensuring that the potential foster placement met their social and cultural needs.

 

Additional Courses.

I am a great believer in continual development through training and learning. Throughout my employment, I have attended courses and workshops to ensure that I have knowledge regarding recent polices, theories and services. I attended various courses such as:

Additional Information.

I am a dedicated, reliable, articulate, and conscientious worker. I am physically fit and healthy - I have completed various half marathons and a full marathon. I also took part in a teacher’s charity boxing event in April 2016. During my career as a teacher, I have helped with school productions, and I have completed level four Trinity vocal exam. I have run various ECA classes, such as, jungle trekking, film studies, circuit training and boxing. I am flexible and adaptable when faced with different settings, cultures, and curriculums.
